What happens

Harper, first mate of the South Sea schooner Evening Star, recounts how the ship sailed from San Francisco with Captain Burgess, his new bride Mrs. Burgess, and the crew, after the previous captain, Derrell, had died months earlier. Harper begins to sense trouble when Mrs. Burgess warns him that her husband is not himself, and Burgess grows agitated after claiming he has seen a figure on deck. Harper and the crew are caught in a frightening night of gunfire, and the eerie signs of death multiply aboard the ship. The Escape series, a radio anthology of adventure stories, broadcast this episode nationally in 1948, with Jack Webb as Harper and Alan Reed as Captain Burgess.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
