What happens
Two survivors of the sunken ship Pride of Papua, Captain Saunders and Jacob, reach a tropical island. Their companion George Herbert, a diver, rides a salvage plan to recover forty thousand pounds in gold from the wreck, with a shipmate named Mamala complicating matters. Herbert descends in an old diving suit they nicknamed Jimmy Goggles, and finds the dead crew and the chest of gold. Afterward he reaches the shore, where local natives mistake the suit for a god. The episode is an installment of the radio series Escape, first aired March 7, 1948, and presents the story as an adventure in the South Seas.
A South Seas island and the nearby coral reef and sunken wreck of the Pride of Papua, off the coast of Papua.
Characters: Captain Saunders, Jacob, George Herbert, Mamala, Mr. Bender
Listen for: The diving suit nicknamed Jimmy Goggles, which George Herbert wears to walk the sea bottom and then to impersonate a god before the island natives.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
