What happens

John Buckham and his friend Lawson ride through the African bush and come upon a small plateau with a silvery grove of unusual trees, circled by white doves. Years later Buckham returns to find Lawson living in a manor house he has built nearby, now changed and unwell. Buckham begins to suspect the grove hides an ancient shrine, and his reading of an old scripture leads him toward the goddess Ashtaroth. The episode is part of the Escape series, a radio adventure anthology whose original air date is given as March 6, 1948. Lawson's odd behavior and the strange pull of the grove drive the mystery forward.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
