What happens
Ronald Dawson, a second-class passenger on a cruise, returns alone to a Mozambique restaurant to retrieve a bronze idol he promised to fetch for Miss Patterson. Caught in a sudden tropical downpour, he takes a wrong turn through a maze of dark alleys and finds himself in a room where a woman and two men are waiting, nervous and tense. Their conversation is laced with hostility and fear, and the evening quickly turns violent as Dawson is pulled into a situation far beyond his experience. The episode is an adventure set in the fetid alleys and rooftops of Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa, drawn from Percival Gibbon's story The Second Class Passenger, broadcast on the anthology series Escape with William N. Robeson as producer and director, and first aired on January 7, 1948.
Mozambique, Portuguese East Africa, a port town of dark alleys, rooftops and waterfront taverns
Characters: Ronald Dawson, Miss Patterson, Jones, Twitchell, the woman, the fat man, the man at the door
Listen for: Dawson's ordeal in the rain-soaked alleys and the tense exchange in the unfurnished room where he is drawn into the group's dispute
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
