What happens
Edward Dunning, a British scientist and authority on medieval life, learns that Carswell, an eccentric writer whose paper he rejected, may be seeking revenge. Dunning's colleague Alfred Smythe warns him of the earlier death of John Harrington, who reviewed Carswell's book and died in a fall. Strange events follow: a warning card, a sudden gust of warm air, and an unsettling presence. Dunning's search for answers turns toward ancient runes and the superstition of casting them. Carswell, the man at the center of these frightening events, is portrayed as a figure who believes in black magic. The series Escape aired on November 19, 1947, with John McIntyre as Edward Dunning and Bill Conrad as Carswell.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
