What happens
Mr. Jukes, chief mate of the Nan Shan, recounts a voyage in the China Sea under Captain McQuirre, a stubborn and unimaginative skipper. The ship, recently transferred to the Siamese flag, loads a cargo at Singapore and takes aboard about two hundred Chinese coolies returning home from a plantation contract. As the barometer drops and an unusual swell rises, Jukes grows uneasy about the captain's decisions and the coolies' safety. The Escape series presents Joseph Conrad's Typhoon, adapted by Les Crutchfield and produced and directed by William N. Robeson, with Raymond Lawrence as Jukes and Cy Kendall as Ralph the Engineer. The broadcast first aired on July 28, 1947.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
