What happens
Archie, the manager of Duffy's Tavern, believes he is facing a tonsillectomy that may kill him. Ed Gardner stars as Archie in this 1946 Duffy's Tavern episode, which aired on February 8, 1946 on CBS, NBC Blue and NBC, with Shirley Booth, Charlie Cantor and Florence Halop. Archie hands his duties to Eddie Green, then worries aloud about the operation, trading jokes and grim stories with Finnegan and Miss Duffy. Archie makes his farewells, with Peggy singing him a song, and he sets out his bequests. The transcript covers only the first part of the episode, so the story's later course is not described here.
Duffy's Tavern
Characters: Archie, Eddie Green, Finnegan, Miss Duffy, Peggy, Miss Otter, Martin
Listen for: Archie's dramatic farewells and his will
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
