What happens
Archie, the manager of Duffy's Tavern, hosts a party to launch Bob Graham, a young singer, and the guest of honor is the writer and actor Robert Benchley. Archie is busy with publicity and food, while Finnegan frets over his shoes and Eddie teases him about the menu. Bob Graham grows restless about his pay of six dollars a week and confides in Archie, who responds with a story about his own rise. Benchley mingles with the guests, flirting with Miss Duffy and trading jokes with the staff. The transcript ends with Benchley's lecture on crooning, which clears much of the room, and Graham's performance, while Grogan's bar makes an offer to lure him away.
Duffy's Tavern, a New York bar, during a party to launch the singer Bob Graham
Characters: Archie, Eddie, Finnegan, Miss Duffy, Bob Graham, Robert Benchley, Grogan
Listen for: Benchley's mock-serious lecture on crooning, and Archie's attempts to keep the singer from leaving for Grogan's bar
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
