Ricky Voltage spins retro TV commercials, movie trailers, TV themes and the songs that went with them, with a fact, a story and a cheesy one-liner between them. A Stupid Potato show.
Don't Touch That Dial is a free retro TV radio station and daily podcast from Stupid Potato: vintage TV commercials, classic TV theme songs, old movie trailers and the songs that went with them, mostly from the 1950s to the 1980s. Your host is Ricky Voltage, a 1980s FM disc jockey with big hair, a satin jacket and a cheesy one-liner for every jingle. Listen free online, live 24 hours a day, or catch the daily 15-minute episode as a podcast.
For decades, commercials and theme songs were the shared soundtrack of American life. Everybody knew Brylcreem's "a little dab'll do ya," Alka-Seltzer's "spicy meatball" and Coca-Cola's 1971 hilltop ad, "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing." TV themes did the same work: the Dragnet march, the eerie Twilight Zone riff, the Gilligan's Island ballad that explained the whole premise in a minute. Don't Touch That Dial plays them side by side with drive-in trailers and radio spots for movies like Star Wars and Ghostbusters, so the dial really does feel stuck in another decade.
Ricky is an original character who still talks like it's 1986. Between pieces he drops a fact or a story about the product, the show or the movie you just heard, then a joke that groans on purpose. The channel is for anyone who grew up in front of a console TV, collectors of vintage ads, and younger listeners who want to hear what the commercial breaks of the past actually sounded like. For full-length reels, the sister channel Don't Touch That Dial: Double Feature plays classroom films and trailer marathons whole.

It was Coca-Cola's 1971 "Hilltop" ad, in which a crowd of young people from around the world sang on a hillside in Italy. The jingle was rerecorded as a full song and became a hit for The New Seekers. Don't Touch That Dial plays the original commercial.
Themes from the 1950s through the 1980s, including Dragnet, I Love Lucy, The Twilight Zone, Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, Cheers, The A-Team, Knight Rider and Miami Vice, mixed in with the commercials and trailers of the same years.
