What happens
Dennis Day, a young man who lives and works in Weaverville, is short of money and wants to take his girlfriend, Mildred Anderson, out for an evening. After she urges him to find better work, he answers an advertisement for a job selling vacuum cleaners and tells the employer, Mr. Lester, a series of inflated lies about his wealth and experience. To seem settled and dependable, he claims to be married with a baby, and a neighbour's infant is borrowed to back up the story. The episode is a comedy of exaggeration and improvised deception built around this bluff.
Weaverville, a small town where Dennis Day lives and works, with the Anderson family's boarding house and a vacuum cleaner company's office
Characters: Dennis Day, Mildred Anderson, Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Lester, Mrs. Hoffheimer
Listen for: Dennis's inflated claims to Mr. Lester about being a millionaire sportsman, and the scene where the borrowed baby is hidden under his coat as the Andersons come in
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
