What happens
The comic-weekly man reads the funnies to his young listeners, opening with a riddle exchange about an umbrella and a shoe. He then reads Hopalong Cassidy, in which Hoppy, California and Lucky hunt smugglers suspected of supplying rifles to the Indians near Pike's Landing, and follows a trail toward a logging camp. Next come Dagwood and Blondie, with Blondie fussing over tidying the house before Alexander arrives with his girlfriend Julia, and a King Arthur-era tale in which the pirate Boltar escapes his guards with the help of the maid Tilikum. The strip Flash Gordon follows, with Flash holding the Martian Queen Menta captive in the spaceport. Roy Rogers, Alice in Wonderland, Dick's Adventures and Rusty Riley complete the reading, each ending on a cliffhanger.
A radio comic-weekly reading in the early 1950s, with serial strip stories set on the American frontier, a comic household, a Camelot-era sea voyage, Mars, a Wonderland garden and Thomas Jefferson's America.
Characters: Comic-Weekly Man, Hopalong Cassidy, California, Lucky, Dagwood, Blondie, Alexander, Julia
Listen for: The comic-weekly man reading the Hopalong Cassidy strip, and the Blondie and Flash Gordon episodes in turn.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
