What happens

The Comic Weekly Man reads the funnies to a young listener, Miss Honey, on a 1953 episode of the Comic Weekly Man series, first aired 1953-07-19. He opens with a safety talk about swimming, then reads the comic strips aloud with sound effects. Beetle Bailey, camping with his company, sleeps in a truck and wakes in town in his underwear. Roy Rogers pursues outlaws who robbed a railroad payroll, and Uncle Remus tells a Br'er Rabbit tale about a cow-itch powder. Dick, a young newspaper man in early California, reports a gold discovery, and Dagwood and Mr. Dithers struggle to remember messages. Rusty Riley and Tex face a dynamited bridge, Walt Disney's Sword and the Rose features Princess Mary and Charles Brandon, and Flash Gordon is trapped in a cave on Titan. Each strip ends on a cliffhanger.

A radio program read aloud, with comic strips from a Sunday funnies page in various American and English settings, including a camp, a frontier town, a farm, and the planet Titan.

Characters: Comic Weekly Man, Miss Honey, Beetle Bailey, Roy Rogers, Uncle Remus, Br'er Rabbit, Dick, Dagwood

Listen for: The cliffhanger endings of each strip and the funny mix-ups of Dagwood and Mr. Dithers.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
