What happens
George Burns and Gracie Allen present the second episode of their comedy program, which spins a parody of the Swiss Family Robinson tale. The episode opens with Gracie as Mama Robinson, George as Papa, and the family still struggling in the sea with no land in sight. Meanwhile, George frets over a new car that Gracie has damaged, and the pair trade increasingly absurd exchanges about the wreck, Father's Day poems and a bogus telephone call. The broadcast was originally aired on June 12, 1940, on CBS and NBC Radio, with Gracie Allen and George Burns leading the cast alongside Bea Benaderet, Meredith Willson and Mel Blanc.
A radio comedy program that begins in the open ocean after a shipwreck and later moves to an island, while the framing sketches take place in George's home and at a broadcast studio.
Characters: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Mama Robinson, Papa Robinson, Frankie, Truman, Raymond, Ray Noble
Listen for: Gracie's literal-minded answers to George's questions about his car, and the Swiss Family Robinson parody that follows the family onto the island.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
