What happens
Gracie Allen and George Burns deal with a series of small domestic mishaps while preparing for the holidays. Gracie hires a young cook named Martha, who is just seventeen and new from Nebraska, and the household gets a comic start with a lunch and some odd cooking instructions. Gracie then runs errands with her neighbor Jimmy, who is mailing a gift to his girl, and the two of them spend the afternoon at the post office. There Gracie finds herself stuck in a long line with a heavy package, and she tries several ways to get ahead of the other customers. The episode is a 1941 Christmas-season instalment of the Burns and Allen radio series, broadcast on CBS and NBC, with Gracie Allen and George Burns in the lead, and the transcript covers only the first part of the story.
The Burns household and the local post office, shortly before Christmas
Characters: Gracie Allen, George Burns, Martha, Jimmy, Herman, Mr. Goodwin
Listen for: Gracie's attempts to get ahead in the post office line and the confusion over the package
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
