What happens
George Burns and Gracie Allen face the summer heat in this episode of their radio comedy series, first broadcast on July 29, 1940. George and Gracie trade jokes about keeping cool, and Gracie's talk about tourists and the heat leads to mix-ups. Gracie is invited to a kitty party, but George is not keen to attend in a costume. The two discuss a new curfew law for young people, and the broadcast features bits from the orchestra leader Artie Shaw. The story is told largely through rapid wordplay and misunderstandings between the two stars.
Hollywood, California, during a hot summer, in and around a radio studio and the Brown Derby restaurant.
Characters: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Artie Shaw, Senor Lee, Sound Man
Listen for: Gracie's misunderstandings of words such as tourist and curfew, and George's attempts to explain them.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
