What happens
Gracie Allen tries to win the presidency of the Beverly Hills Uplift Society, while her husband George Burns is unaware of her plans. Gracie hopes to impress the club with a celebrity guest, and when the planned visitor cannot attend, she turns to actor Charles Lawton for help. The episode is a comedy of mistaken identities and rivalries among the club members, with Bill Goodwin appearing as the sponsor's representative. Lawton is persuaded to speak to the club, and George is drawn into an argument about acting and Shakespeare. The Burns and Allen radio series aired on CBS and NBC, and this broadcast is from February 9, 1943.
The Burns home in Beverly Hills, where Gracie hosts a meeting of the Beverly Hills Uplift Society, and nearby at Charles Lawton's house.
Characters: Gracie Allen, George Burns, Charles Lawton, Bill Goodwin, Bea Benaderet, Meredith Willson, Mel Blanc
Listen for: Gracie's scheme to win the club election, George's mangled Shakespeare, and Charles Lawton's withering speech to the women's club.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
