What happens
Detective Clover investigates the poisoning death of Peggy Warner, a young woman found in an alley early one morning. The investigation leads him to Tate's Bar where Peggy worked, and then to Charles Blake, a man she met there, whose family had briefly employed her as a maid before dismissing her for her drinking and behavior.
New York City, particularly Broadway and Times Square area, including Tate's Bar and the Blake residence; the story unfolds on a cold February morning starting at the police hospital and moving through various locations as the detective investigates.
Characters: Detective Clover, Peggy Warner, Tate (bar owner), Charles Blake, Mrs. Blake, Tom Blake
Listen for: The poetic opening narration about Broadway and the winter morning that sets the noir tone; the bartender's account of Peggy's behavior and her connection to Charles Blake; Mrs. Blake's defensive reactions and the phone call from her son Tom.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
