What happens

Private investigator Barry Craig witnesses a man fall and die on the icy pavement in front of an apartment building late at night. The man turns out to be Walter Bali, a former nightclub owner from the Midwest who came to New York to collect on an unpaid debt. Craig saw a young redheaded woman with the man before his fall, but the building's superintendent insists no such woman lives there and the back door lock has been forced.
