Because of their refusal to expose the plot for revolt among the jewel pit-sleeves, Ataya, white queen of Tor, orders Tarzan, O'Rourke, and Kyleuk to be publicly whipped. In the Shawn's palace in Rator, Darno overhears Timor and Pol Tarr, Ratorian traitors, conspiring to betray the Shawn's war plans to Ataya.

The Frenchman is trapped by the conspirators. In the crowded square before Atayah's palace in Tor, Tor's an, O'Rourke, and Kyleuk are bound to stakes. In a line of elephants written by the palace guards, Tor's an recognizes Black Maluk, an elephant he had befriended in the Torian paddocks, and riding him, Mungo, Atayah's chief of warriors.

At Tor's an's call, Black Maluk jerks Mungo from his back and dashes him to the ground. Followed by the other elephants who have tossed their riders aside, the jungle titan lunges through the screaming panic-stricken crowd straight toward the eight men.
