The mutual broadcasting system presents the secrets of Scotland Yard with your host and narrator, Clive Brooke. How do you do? This is Clive Brooke. How good are your nerves? Are you calm, cool and collected?

Or are you apt to go to pieces in a crisis? Can you face a tricky situation serenely and come out of it unscathed? Or do you panic and get yourself into more and deeper trouble?

Then you'll appreciate the behaviour of Ronald Bivian Leit. Ronald Leit was an ex-officer of the British Army who had served his country honourably during the 1914-18 war. He had suffered from shell shock during the last full-scale German attack, and when he was released from the Army, his nerves were in a pretty bad state.

In 1919, he was an assistant master in mathematics at the school in Cheltenham, England. Our story begins on July the 5th of that year, a Saturday. light had been out for a bicycle ride in the country.

It was evening now and he was returning to his home in Leicester, where he lived with his mother. He was a well-dressed, not unattractive man, with intelligent, clear-cut features. He rode along at a leisurely pace and whistled as he went.

Sorry to bother you. I think so. Oh, yes. It's this terrible old bite of mine. The front wheels are always coming loose. I wonder, have you got a spanner than your toolkit? I think so. It's not the second, I'll see.

Oh, thanks, old, please. Colin, what need you doing? Oh, don't you bother I'm used to it. You fixed it in a moment. No, no, I insist. It says both hairs, isn't it? Yes, but it's hard to be kind of you, I'm sure.
