Lux presents Hollywood. Leave your brother's company, the makers of Lux Flakes. Bring you the Lux Radio Theatre, starring Paulette Goddard and Patrick Knowles in Kitty. Ladies and gentlemen, your producer, Mr. William Kealey. Reading from Hollywood, ladies and gentlemen, London in the 1700s was a city of sharp contrast, of beggarly squalor and pretentious luxury. Swung between these two extremes is the story
of Kitty, an illiterate cockney wave who is lifted out of the hound's ditch slums to become the toast of England, partly because a great artist saw beneath her dirt and rags a haunting beauty. Start in our title role as she was in Paramount's screenplay is Paulette Goddard, of Hollywood's most talented and lovely actresses.
Costard, with Patrick Knowles, who tonight makes his debut in our theatre. The Screen Production Kitty was a costume-maker's dream, laid in a period when ladies of quality dressed to the hilt in gorgeous gowns and numbless fluffy pedicots, and fashion decreed that they be kept fresh and new-looking to save the beauty of those costly fabrics.
Notice how this was accomplished in a period when no such thing as Lux Flakes was available? I don't know. But I do know that the studio kept those costumes fresh and spotless through long weeks of shooting by daily Lux Care.
Something I'm sure you women in the audience appreciate and practice in your own homes. It's time for our curtain and act one of Kitty, starting Paulette Goddard in the title role and Patrick Knows as Sir Hugh Marcy.
London 1783. In front of his fashionable residence, Thomas Gainesborough, the celebrated painter, has just bought a thief, a miserable and ragged young woman who struggles vainly to escape. I let go when the Constable arrives, picking my pocket from the Mound House.
