Now we live on the Lower East Side of New York. I know most comedians tell you they were born on the Lower East Side of New York. But I'm the only comedian still living there.
My mother went down for the mail that morning. She saw her name on the mailbox. Fanny Stein. Underneath she saw a strange name, Jackie Clark. Now on the lower east side of New York, Clark is a very strange name.
The way the lower east side is going now, Cohen is a very strange name. She came upstairs, she started to yell at me. Who is this gangster, Jackie Clark? Some amoress no gangster, that's me.
I'm a comedian. I'm a show business. I changed my name. I have to use a name like Jackie Clark. I have to use a name like Jackie Clark. I can't use the name Jack Stein.
That's not for an actor. Jack Stein. That's for an eye doctor. She said, Jack Y. Clark, their offensive name, Jackie Clark. You'll have to walk around Park Avenue now in the daytime. Tomorrow you'll be fancy. You buy yourself a bow tie.
And tonight you'll get out of the house. Jack is dying. You're ashamed. She said, but Jack Y. Clark, you're not ashamed. I said, mama, you don't understand. She said, I don't understand. Frank Sinatra didn't change his name.
The clock. At Sullivan didn't change his name to clock. But, Jackenstein, Jackie Clark, I said, mama, she said, don't give me mama. And you went to kindergarten? Who went to kindergarten? Little clock? Or little Stein?
