It was early February when California and I threw our diamond hitches on two pack horses and started the long journey to the eastern slopes of towering Mount Diablo.

We were headed for Sulfur Valley and that's a third of the way to the Ablukop. There we were supposed to rendezvous with a party of army officers who would start us on the other side and should have reached the Abluk Summit and descended again by the time we got there.

What they hadn't. When we reached our destination we saw no one. Sulfur Valley was as desperate as ever and quite deserted. Whoa there! Whoa! Well, looks like nobody's here yet, Hoppy. Ah, so I see.

I wonder. Well, nothing to worry about, I guess. Like the climb took long and expected. Oh, while we're waiting to set up camp and get a fire going. Sure, sure. Know any of these colors were supposed to mean?
