A few weeks ago in Deadwood, I had attended the trial of a Sioux policeman named Crow Dog. He had killed a great chief, Spotted Tail, and refused to offer any defense for his crime. The man was convicted and sentenced to hang.
When I returned from Cheyenne following the horse race, I found a message at my hotel, asking me to call at my earliest convenience on Mr. Harry Clumb, who my remember to be Crow Dog's attorney, I went immediately to his office.
Mr. Kendall? Yes. I recall seeing you at the trial. What did you sit down? Thank you. I understand you ought to be congratulated. Oh, you mean winning the race? I was lucky. You made quite a name for yourself between here and Cheyenne.
