They have some rather strange customs in the West. There's a town in Montana territory where it's against the law to carry a gun. The sheriff lives by this order, but other men can die because of it.

One-tier, gentleman. Herewith, an Englishman's account of life and death in the West. As a reporter for the London Times, he writes his colorful and unusual account. But as a man with a gun, he lives and becomes a part of the violent years in the new territories.

Now, starring Ben Rice, this is the story of J.B. Kendall, frontier gentleman. The journey had taken 98 days from St. Louis. I'd come by riverboat, up the Missouri, with little stern wheeler climbing, churning, cuddling over two thousand miles of sandbar and ratty.

Then into the lonely wastes of another swifter stream, the Yellowstone, until we finally docked at South Sunday in Montana territory. My ticket had cost $300, which left me about 50 in my pocket. And the slim hopes that there'd be a letter at the express office with my remittance from England.

Afternoon. Just enough for both. Right. I wonder if there's a letter for me. J.B. Kendall. Kendall. Any trouble on the way up? I hear the soup and kicking up the heels, sittin' balls makin' big medicine again.

Don't sound good. Oh, we didn't see that here. In the rules. English, ain't ya? Yes. I figured by your talk, don't see many you in these parts. Nope, nothin' for you, mister. You're sure? It's father in court.

Nope, maybe tomorrow on the Overland, though. Say you planning to stay wild. I think so. Better get in register then. Register? Over to Sheriff Plantins' office. There's a notice on the wall, maybe missed your attention.
