Transfusion

Destination Freedom. Destination Freedom. Dramatization of the great democratic traditions of the Negro people is brought to you by Station WMAQ as a part of the pageant of history and of America's own Destination Freedom. During the prophetic years before the outbreak of World War II, an unknown Negro scientist had quietly begun work on what was to become one of the medical achievements of the decade,

The development of a practical blood substitute, Plasma. In a chapter entitled, Transfusion, Destination Freedom tells the story of that scientist. Dr. Charles R. Drew of Howard University, whose work saved thousands of lives on battlefields from Berlin to Buganville.

They're bombing the shelter, Doctor. I know, I know. Move him in there, I've got to operate anyway. Not on me, Doctor. Yes, I'm you, soldier. Easy there. We're sheltered, I'm right beside you. Doc, Doc, I'll hit us.

Pull me up. Let me go. Hold him, Lieutenant. You're hurt, son. You've got to have something to keep you going until we get back. You need blood. Lieutenant, raise that rack higher. Hit, raise, doctor. The plasma's in.

Good. This pulse is getting pretty. The lift is left on. Ah! Ah! Now, insert the needle. There. Let it flow. Doc, what? What are you putting in my arm? Don't move, soldier. You're getting a transfusion.

Who's blood you're putting in me? No one you know, son. But who's blood? It's plasma, soldier. Let's stop and make you get up and walk like an actual man again. I don't know who this Dr. Drew that invented it is or where he came from, but he must have had guys like you and mine for a long long time.
