This is Crime Classics. I am Thomas Hyland with another true story of crime. Listen, playtime in the afternoon in Suffolk, England, 1676. The game, croquet as it was played then, heavier mallets because they were lead-weighted, wider wickets and leather-covered balls.
The sought you just heard was a pretty one made by Guy Marcy, and now a friend of his, John Nemes, leans over to line up his shot. shot. Beautiful shot. And now John's cousin Roger kneels down to sight his shot.
Careful player. Lines it up and which was Guy Marcy muscular man hitting Roger over the head with a lead-weighted mallet killing him. Tonight and I report to you on Roger Nims how he though dead won the game. Crime classics. A series of true crime stories taken from the records and newspapers of every land from
every time. Your host each week, Mr. Thomas Highland, connoisseur of crime, student of violence, and teller of murders. Now once again, Mr. Thomas Highland. The Dutch were drowning the English off the coast of Suffolk, and the English were retaliating.
The latest and greatest naval war of the 17th century was being fought. The war which gave to history Thomas Goulding, who demanded only a flaming deck and clean cutlass. And above of these battles, white flips above, was the castle of the Nems family, and the Nems' cousins used to sit and watch the skies being lighted with a shock of sea battle.
They watched because they believed this much superior to taking part. They were rich and had paid other men to fight the Dutch in their place. Roger and John, lads of 20, orphans both, and when there was no fighting to watch, they would have sport, play croquet.
