Women have more faith than men do. Men are skeptics. Christmas is all about women. The Blessed Virgin Mary is at the center of Christmas. Guys didn't do much. They stood around and watched. Joseph, what did he do?
Joseph stood there. He said, why me? Why now? Why? Why couldn't it have been six months from now? Mary looked at Joseph and she said, They say we shouldn't fear. They say to fear not and to have faith.
Well, so that's easy for them to say. How about me? Christmas is a woman's time. Women have always been trying to fill men with beautiful thoughts and a beautiful vision of life. In church, in Sunday school, they tried to teach us that the Christmas tree was invented by Martin Luther, who went for a walk in the woods of Germany.
Christmas Eve, 1522. Martin Luther went for a walk and he looked up through the branches of the pine tree and he saw the stars in the sky and he said, look, it's like the love of God.
It's boundless in the heaven and yet the stars seemed to dwell in the branches of this humble pine tree. We'll take that tree home and we'll put candles in the branches as a symbol of the light of light God's love given for us.
This is the story that women told us in the Lutheran Church. But guys know that it wasn't like that, probably. Chances are that Luther went for a walk in the woods. It was dark. He was looking at the sky at the stars.
He ran, wham, into that tree. He really hurt. It really hurt. He just walked, wham, into it. And he looked at it and he said, you know, if people put lights on this, that wouldn't have happened.
