The Radio's conversation for women
This is Norm Pierce reporting from Los Angeles with Dr. Robert J. Schroeder President of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Naturally, he's an authority on animals, and we're seeking his advice on pets as Christmas gifts.
Pets make fine gifts, Norm, as long as both the giver and receiver realize that a pet is not a toy, but an animal that needs affection, understanding, discipline, and training. Tell me, Dr. Schroeder, how do you choose a pet?
The pet should match the home he's going to live in, and the people he's going to live with. For example, a Saint Bernard may be difficult to handle in a city apartment but could be an excellent gift for people who live in the country.
Doctor, how about ocelots and alligators and that sort of thing? Well, Norm, so-called exotic animals require special attention and usually don't make very good pets. Dogs, cats, birds, or fish are your best bets. Do you have any special advice for the prospective pet buyer, Doctor?
I'd be remiss if I didn't say, consult a veterinarian. He can make sure you're getting a healthy pet and he can advise you about health measures such as vaccinations. A veterinarian should be a partner in every relationship between animals and people.
Dr. Schroeder, you've helped to make sure there's going to be a lot of happy homes for happy pets this Christmas on tabloid. Radio's conversation.
