What happens
Norman Blake, a statistician in a perfectly adjusted future society, discovers a single flaw in the system: a candy bar has been taken from a baby, the first theft in decades. Alarmed, he visits Andrew C. Rednick, a free-lance analyst, and asks to be made neurotic so he can think like a thief and catch the culprit. As his sessions with Rednick continue, Norman's frustrations build, and he finds his own life and ambitions slipping toward disorder. This is the X Minus One episode Selana, broadcast by NBC on 1957-09-19, with Walter Black as Norman Blake and David Ross as Andrew C. Rednick.
A future society in the year 2055 that has been carefully engineered for psychological balance, with a city district, a deserted skyscraper, and government offices.
Characters: Norman Blake, Andrew C. Rednick, Henry Foreman, Neda
Listen for: Listen for Norman's sessions with Rednick, where the analyst reverses the usual process and tries to make his patient neurotic.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
