What happens

Stanton Freelin, a man in a legal murder system where hunters are assigned victims by the Emotional Catharsis Board, receives notice that his next target is a woman named Janet Patsig. Freelin is unsettled by the assignment and sets out to find her. Working with a cab driver who knows the city, he tracks her to a café in Chelsea. The story is part of the X Minus One series, first broadcast on March 6, 1957, and adapted from a story by Robert Sheckley.

A future where war has been outlawed and replaced by a system of licensed murder, in New York City.

Characters: Stanton Freelin, Janet Patsig, Immanuel Gale, E.J., Stan, Jenny, Cab driver

Listen for: The contrast between Freelin's growing unease about his assignment and the bureaucratic, matter-of-fact way the system of legal killing is explained.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
