What happens
A starship is knocked out of hyperspace by a meteor, and its celestial atlas is destroyed along with the navigator Spon, leaving the crew lost far from home. Captain Bonner must decide how to find a route back. Navigation officer Lieutenant Groden is badly injured in the head and faces the loss of his sight, and the ship's electronic computers cannot be used during a jump. The crew struggles with heat, failing air supplies and the strain of their situation. Groden's injuries lead to a strange development during the next jump that gives the crew a new hope of finding their way.
