What happens

Clay Harbank, a veteran spacer longing to return home to the planet Lulungomena, is nearly ready to retire after years of gambling and service at Frontier Station 563. Tensions rise between Clay and a young Earthman who challenges him at cards, and Mort Jonski, a fellow Dorsai man, grows uneasy when a Hixabrod arbitrator arrives at the station. Mort begins to suspect the visitor has come for him, and he tries to make sense of what the young man and the Hixabrod have been discussing. The story is adapted from the Galaxy magazine novelette by Gordon R. Dixon, broadcast on the anthology series X Minus One on May 29, 1956, with the cast led by Ralph Camargo and Ned Weaver.

Characters: Clay Harbank, Mort Jonski, The Kid, Dora Lassus

Listen for: Clay's wistful talk of Lulungomena and the Hixabrod's cold, literal honesty when he is asked about the planet

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
