What happens
Bentley, a scout sent to an alien world, is fitted with a heavy protective harness called the Protec by Professor Sligit, an early prototype. On the planet, the orange-skinned natives, the tellyans, mistake him for a possible evil spirit and prepare to initiate him into their society of ghost doctors. Bentley's harness repeatedly activates its force field, blocking the natives' spears and making the ritual difficult. Sligit is heard over the radio, and the story follows Bentley's attempts to satisfy the tellyans while the harness keeps reacting to every threat.
An alien planet, a tellyan village with campfires and a ritual ground, and the scout's landed ship; the story is set in the far future.
