What happens

In a frozen world under a dark star, Paul and his family live in a shelter of blankets around a coal fire, fetching pails of air from the city outside. Paul's father, Alfred, and mother, Ethel, watch over Paul's younger sister and the nest, while Paul tells of a light he saw in a building across the way. The family gathers for their Sunday story, a tale of the sun and the dark star that carried the world away. Paul and Alfred go out to check on the building, and then a shuffling sound comes toward the nest. This is X Minus One, a science fiction radio drama first broadcast on March 28, 1956, adapted from a story by Fritz Leiber.

A frozen, ruined city on a dark-star-cooled Earth, where a family lives in a blanket-walled nest heated by a coal fire.

Characters: Paul, Alfred, Ethel, Bob, Sis, Dr. Alfred Hutchinson, Ralph

Listen for: The sound of shuffling footsteps coming toward the nest, and Alfred's question about what is out there.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
