What happens
Lee Corby, a private car-for-hire driver, picks up a nervous passenger who talks of a new life and a fare to the depot. Soon after the passenger leaves Lee's cab, a shot rings out, and Lee finds the man dead inside a bungalow. A woman carrying the man's briefcase, Elaine Brandt, hires Lee's cab, and the two are drawn into a deal over a diary belonging to a murdered newspaper reporter, Paul Winslow. The diary could expose a crime syndicate, and both Lee and Elaine begin to bargain over it, each trying to get the better of the other. The series is The Whistler, first aired on October 11, 1953.
A city with a depot and bungalows, a cocktail lounge and a hotel in San Diego, and a cafe across the border in Tijuana.
Characters: Lee Corby, Elaine Brandt, Frank, Paul Winslow, Sanchez
Listen for: Listen for Lee's growing greed as he realises the diary is worth far more than he first thought, and for the tense exchanges between Lee and Elaine as each tries to outwit the other.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
