What happens
John Hendrix is convicted of murdering his wife and her simple-minded son Henry for their money, and is sent to the state penitentiary for life. Years later, in the penitentiary, his cellmate Bill proposes that they break out together to recover money hidden on the old estate, but Hendrix refuses. The transcript breaks off as a young man and his companion arrive at a deserted-seeming inn on a stormy road and are taken in by a strange mother and son. The Whistler series is presented by CBS, and the original air date is May 16, 1942.
A southern village near Marsdenburg, its courthouse and state penitentiary, and a remote country road and a deserted inn on the outskirts of town.
Characters: John Hendrix, Bill, Henry, Mrs. Hendrix, George Kimball, Joan, The Whistler
Listen for: The stormy night arrival at the inn, where the mother and son insist on the candle-lit dark and the car has disappeared.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
