What happens

Dan Partcher, editor of the Southport newspaper, publicly defends Clara Wentworth, who is on trial for poisoning her husband. Although the prosecution eventually drops the charges, Dan's sense of certainty shifts as he and Clara grow closer and marry. Early in their marriage, he begins to suspect that she is guilty after hearing her talk in her sleep, and he is unable to put the thought aside. Dan confides his doubts to District Attorney Gresham and begins to watch Clara closely. As his suspicion grows and Clara senses the change in him, the tension between them builds toward a crisis.

Southport, a small town where the local newspaper and the district courtroom shape public opinion, and later the Partcher home and a summer cabin at the lake.

Characters: Dan Partcher, Clara Wentworth, Mr. Newell, Mr. Gresham, Walter Wentworth

Listen for: Dan's growing doubt about Clara after her sleep-talking, and the word she repeats in her sleep.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
