What happens
Kenneth Devlin waits in the dark outside his Monterey coast house, then slips inside and doses his wife Emily's milk with poison. Laurel, a woman he has been seeing, becomes his second wife, but she grows frightened and unstable, and Devlin begins to worry that she may expose him. His housekeeper Frida, who has seen what he did, is quietly drawn into his plans. This is an episode of The Whistler, a radio mystery series, first broadcast on November 6, 1949.
Monterey coast, California, in the late 1940s
Characters: Kenneth Devlin, Emily Devlin, Laurel, Frida, Dr. Ferris, George, Sheriff
Listen for: The Whistler's signature whistle at the start of the program, and the sound of the telephone ringing in the house
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
