What happens
Cartier, a stage magician, owes two thousand dollars to Groberg, a booking agent who has threatened to ruin his career. A dark, silent man abducts Cartier at a railroad station and takes him to Groberg's office, where Groberg gives him until Saturday to pay. Cartier tries to borrow the money from theatrical managers and friends, but each refuses him. Desperate, he goes looking for a way to raise cash. The episode is an installment of The Whistler, originally broadcast on CBS on January 10, 1943.
New York City in the early 1940s, including a railroad station, an office building on 42nd Street and a Greenwich Village apartment overlooking Washington Square.
Characters: Cartier, Groberg, Lou, Sandra, Georgie Wilton, Matt Rubicon, Harry Masnick, Billy
Listen for: Cartier's hypnotism demonstration at the party, where Sandra seems to describe events before they happen.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
