What happens

Agatha Mayberry, a widow running a farm during wartime labor shortages, sells half her land to neighbor John Dalton for two thousand dollars, paying a thousand in cash and a note for the rest. Dalton's hired hand, Joe, witnesses the deal and then comes to work at her farm. Her niece Della, bored and resentful of farm work, has been dreaming of leaving for New York or Hollywood. Joe is an escaped asylum patient, and the household is uneasy when a severe storm settles over the isolated countryside. The Whistler, a radio anthology series, presents this story of the killers, first broadcast on May 1, 1943 on CBS. The lead actors are not named in the transcript.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
