What happens

Hugo Hayden, a recent Oxford graduate, cannot find work in America and has run out of money. After his novel is rejected by his old classmate Michael Baldwin, a publisher, he meets Babs, a singer who sings at a nightclub owned by Bert Morgan. Hugo and Babs begin a romance, though she is engaged to Bert and warns Hugo to stay away. Bert takes Hugo on as a secretary, and Hugo keeps seeing Babs in secret while the tension grows. The story follows Hugo as his situation becomes more desperate and he begins to plot his next moves.

An American city, where Hugo waits for a job, frequents a bohemian bar and nightclub, and works for the gangster Bert Morgan.

Characters: Hugo Hayden, Michael Baldwin, Babs, Bert Morgan, George, Judd, Police Chief Martin, Mike Evans

Listen for: Hugo's conversations with Babs and Bert, and the notes and the police chief's visit in the later scenes.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
