What happens

Mr. William Brown, a bookkeeper at Crandall and Ames, finds forty thousand dollars in cash in his mailbox by mistake, meant for another William Brown in apartment 12. Tempted by the money and the luxuries it could buy, he goes upstairs, and the other tenant hints that he knows what happened. The Whistler series, first aired May 26, 1947, follows Brown as he begins spending the money and planning his next move while a newspaper reports a shooting connected to the cash.

A city apartment building and a gourmet shop, with a tailor and a clothing store, in the 1940s.

Characters: Mr. Brown, Elsie, Mr. Simkins, Mike McKee, Victor Marco

Listen for: Brown's decision to keep the money after finding it in the mailbox, and the conversation with the man in apartment 12.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
