What happens

Anne Martin, wife of district attorney Phil Martin, is terrified that letters from her past will ruin her husband's chance at a Senate appointment. She meets Roger Henderson, a former lover and blackmailer, who demands ten thousand dollars for the letters. Anne pays, but Roger is soon found dead in his apartment. Anne turns to private detective Joe Burton for help as she searches for the letters, and Phil is assigned to investigate the murder. The Whistler series, first broadcast on January 6, 1947, presents this tale of secrets and blackmail.

A city in the American West, in the late 1940s, including the Martins' home and Roger Henderson's apartment by the river.

Characters: Anne Martin, Phil Martin, Roger Henderson, Joe Burton, Mrs. Mooner

Listen for: Roger Henderson's demand for money in exchange for the letters, and the discovery of his body outside his apartment.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
