What happens
Carl, a chauffeur for Arnold Pearson, has been carrying on a secret romance with Pearson's wife Amy, a relationship that ends abruptly when Amy casually dismisses him. Brooding over her rejection and a deeper resentment of how he is treated, Carl begins to plan a way to harm her. Arnold, meanwhile, hears rumors about his wife and an orchestra leader, and the tensions in the household grow sharper. The Whistler is the series' narrator; this episode is from The Whistler, first broadcast on October 28, 1946.
A wealthy household in a West Coast city in the 1940s, including the Pearson home, a nightclub called the Club Madrid, and a service station.
Characters: Carl, Amy Pearson, Arnold Pearson, Terry Larkin, Martha, Joe
Listen for: Pay attention to the dialogue between Carl and Amy at the Club Madrid, and to the service station exchange about the speedometer and mileage record.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
