What happens

Frankie and his partner Pat are hiding in a rooming house after a robbery in which a bystander was shot dead. A newspaper photo of the victim, Philip Abel, looks exactly like Frankie, and Frankie grows uneasy about Pat's silence. Frankie leaves town and, on a bus, meets Barbara Abel and her young son Teddy, who take him for the dead man's husband. Frankie begins a relationship with the family, and the story turns on the question of Philip Abel's past.

A rooming house in a city, a bus and train station, and the home of the Abel family, mid-1940s America.

Characters: Frankie, Pat, Barbara Abel, Teddy, Philip Abel

Listen for: The bus scene where Frankie realizes the boy and his mother mistake him for Philip Abel.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
