What happens

Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, two adventurers, travel into the mountains of Kafiristan with the ambition of becoming kings. They win over the tribal villages by posing as gods, and Dravot proposes an ceremony of Masonic rites to strengthen their hold on the people. Their rule grows more ambitious and more dangerous as the story unfolds. Mr. Dan O'Herlihy stars in this adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's story The Man Who Would Be King, produced for the Suspense series and heard in its May 31, 1959 broadcast, as the transcript presents it.

Listen for: Dravot and Carnehan's claim to kingship and the tribal villagers' reactions to them

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
