What happens
A young freelance writer, Mr. Phelan, hires typist Miss Markham, whose office is in an old building where an elevator man, Gribkin, takes great interest in his work. The writer grows suspicious after a series of odd delays and missed meetings, and begins to wonder what has become of her. Piecing together what he has seen, he starts to imagine a dark story around the building and its quiet staff. The episode is part of the CBS series Suspense, first broadcast on May 11, 1950, starring John Lund.
An old office building in a city, its third-floor typing office, the elevator and its basement.
Characters: Mr. Phelan, Miss Markham, Gribkin
Listen for: The elevator man's manner whenever the writer asks to go upstairs, and the writer's growing unease about Miss Markham.
Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
