What happens

Sam and Martha are a devoted-seeming married couple in a small town, known to their friends as the lovebirds. Martha, however, has grown weary of caring for Sam, whose long illness has kept her tied to the house for seven years, and she privately wishes him dead. After a party, a conversation about travel brochures and a mix-up over sleeping pills raise suspicions between them. Sam's health shows an unexpected turn, and Martha begins to plot. This episode of Suspense, broadcast on March 3, 1949, stars Joan Fontaine as Martha, with Lester Sharp as Sam.

A small town house, where Sam and Martha live together, and the surrounding streets and drugstore.

Characters: Martha, Sam, Doug, Betty, Doc Roberts, Jim

Listen for: Martha's private thoughts about Sam, and the moment Sam's sleeping pills become a source of suspicion between them.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
