What happens

Mitch Mitchell, a newspaper columnist writing about a serial killer known as the Avenger, is told by his editor to stop his articles after another woman is murdered. He dines with his friend Jeannie, and they are joined by Lieutenant Bill Dow, who is also investigating the case. All three have received anonymous notes directing them to a community chapel at midnight, where they believe the Avenger may appear. The friends debate who among them might be the killer, and their unease grows as midnight approaches. Suspense; original air date November 30, 1950; starring Van Heflin.

A modern American city in winter, including a newspaper office, a restaurant bar, and a community chapel on Seventh Street at night.

Characters: Mitch Mitchell, Jeannie, Bill Dow, Chief Naylor, Mario

Listen for: The anonymous notes summoning the three friends to the chapel at midnight, and the growing suspicion among them about who the Avenger might be.

Written from the episode itself; it never gives away the ending. Every recording is remastered for the stream: cleaned of rumble, hiss and mains hum (and the old TV whine where we found it), then levelled in two passes to steady broadcast loudness, so one show is never quieter than the next.
